How do fax machines work?

I know how to operate my fax machine, but how do I make it work?
Do I just hook it up to my telephone line? and receive and send faxes from the same number?

Yup, that’s all there is to it. Fax machine + phone line = Working Fax Machine.

    Yes, you can hook it up to your regular phone line. Just make sure that you set it to answer on the 3′rd ring or greater; otherwise it may answer before you get to the phone to pick up a normal voice call.
