What is wrong with my copy machine?

The copies that come out of my machine have a dark stripe down the left side. At first it was a small stripe, but it has gotten bigger. The maintenance agreement has run out, so I would like to address the problem myself.

If the dark stripe is more dark shaded on one side of the paper then it’s probably the optics (aka the mirrors) that are dirty/dusty. Take the glass off and wipe down the mirrors. Be careful not to leave fingerprints. Wear gloves. If it’s an actual black stripe it could be anything from the drum being scratched to dirty roller/heat presses. You have to be really careful with the drum as it is extremly fragile and can’t be touched (fingerprints). It also had selenium and arsenic coating so if it is the drum I would advise being very careful.
Depending on the make and model of the copier you may be able to find drum toner combination at Sams of Office Max. The drum is sometimes available as one piece package with the toner.
Call your local Staples or Office Max or look in their catalog.

It probably just needs to be cleaned. Make sure you can put it back together if you take it apart!
