Try getting the cartridges refilled, with my experience the black recycles perfectly, however I have problems with the colour, some of the colours don’t seem to work so I always buy new ones.

i have an HP 1600 series printer/scanner/copier && i always buy my ink refills from wal-mart. seems to be the cheapest and closest place i can find them. the refill packs you can find have been more of a hassle to me than anything, after having to screw a hole in the top of the cartridge, carefully "inject" the ink into the old cartridge, and then plug the hole back up. whatever you decide to do, good luck!
