Are there FAX machines available for broadband or cable telephone service? ex: comcast ?

Posted on February 27th, 2010 by admin

I had a fax years ago and loved it. I want another but none seem to work with COmcast phone service (0ver the web).

Any ideas ?

Thanks

p.s. I am aware of the services that can be purchased online, I’m trying to avoid.

I have phone service though our cable company, but it is separate from our internet service. My fax works just fine. I know when you use VoiP you are limited to the amount of phones you can plug in. At least you used to be.
It looks like your Comcast works the same way my cable phone does. You should be just fine.I have used http://faxzero.com/ in a pinch, and it works OK. It is free, but you get ads on the cover page, which is OK unless you are sending a resume.
Try calling Comcast tech support. They should know for sure.
Good luck!

To use colored pencils well enough, should I need colored pencil paper?

Posted on February 27th, 2010 by admin

I’m wondering, because I kind of want to get back into using colored pencils, but I remember the last time I spent a long while on just one pic and scanned it, my sketch paper pretty much ruined the quality of its texture and I wound up starting all over, lol. I’ve used copier paper and the colors are alright, but I’m still kind of iffy on what I should be using. Thanks!

I use ivory card stock with my colored pencils when I’m not working out a sketch in my sketch book. You could also use white card stock. Some of the more vibrant colors will stand out nicely against the black. I find that card stock has enough tooth to the paper to hold on to the color and is sturdy enough for applying your color in layers. I don’t think copier paper will do justice to your work, so don’t waste your time using it other than for rough sketches. I haven’t tried illustration board because I don’t work on really large illustrations, but you might try that when it’s on sale. You could probably cut one board into four pieces if you are not working on a massive project. You can always chat with the sales people at Michaels as they know their product and many are artists who are working in there to earn money for more supplies along with paying the regular bills. Any art supply store is good for having knowledgeable staff. You can always read up on the internet and their are several good books out on using colored pencils and the paper that works best with them along with techniques. You might find some good books at your local library or look on Amazon and read the reviews. Hope this helped you a bit!

I am creating a document that will be printed on a copier. How do I prepare the photos so they copy well?

Posted on February 27th, 2010 by admin

Our school creates a yearly handbook and directory, loaded with pictures. They are about 60 pages combined and have lots of photographs. To make them look good, we have to print them, as copying doesn’t give the photos enough variety of shades or shades of gray.

We are in Thailand and are not working with the most sophisticated copying equipment, though the copy shops are cheap and efficient.

I remember from the early 80’s, before sophisticated printers, that you could process the pictures so that they could print well on black and white dot-matrix printers and would copy well. The shades of grey were made by distancing of the pixels.

Anyway, is there anyway to do something like this with Picasa or another simple photo editor?

Thanks a lot!!! – William in Chiang Rai, Thailand

I suppose it depends on the printer. But usually simple copiers are able to print few shades of gray. So your pictures will come with high contrast. The best thing to do is to prepare the pictures with high contrast before so that the copier will not change them much. I don’t know Picasa but adjusting contrast is a simple operation that any photo editing program can do. Just edit the photos with a high contrast that looks good.
